Kaafiron Ki Namaaz released on Thursday (April 07, 2016), on YouTube. Due to its provocative title, the Indian Censor Board refused to allow it a theatrical release. Despite securing a plethora of awards at various film festivals, the makers of Kaafiron Ki Namaaz were told that the movie wasn’t safe for public screening, and it ended up online. Kaafiron is plural to Kaafir which means infidel or unbeliever & ‘Namaaz‘ is the ritual prayer prescribed by Islam. Nobody at the film festival complained about the title, but our beloved Censor board couldn’t stop complaining. Apart from the titular controversy, the movie also features some strong political commentary.

Kaafiron Ki Namaaz (KKN) directed by Ram Ramesh Sharma, is the story of a court-martialed army officer, a writer and a musician who share their deepest, darkest secrets on a rainy Christmas Eve in Srinagar, Kashmir at an abandoned hotel. It stars the very talented theatre actor Chandrahas Tiwari, who involuntarily pulled a Heath Ledger act, and passed away before the film released. Alok Chaturvedi & Joydip Mukhopadhyay portray string character themes. The underlying theory within Kaafiron Ki Namaaz, is the idea of a ‘confession’. In the movie,  each of the characters end up confessing something from their own gruelling past. The film, however features a major twist right at the end (couldn’t tell you even if I wanted to, I don’t believe in spoilers!)

The film’s high point is the scathing exchange of dialogue. Kaafiron Ki Namaaz includes some really hard-hitting dialogues, which will make you laugh, cry & leave you thinking. The stellar performances by a highly underrated cast, is the icing on the cake. You will surely fall in love with this film, if you like meaningful cinema. The best part is, the film-makers didn’t even think twice before releasing it on YouTube for free, and this is what aspiring film-makers (like me) should learn. Cinematic success comes from the drive to engage passionate audiences, and the makes of KKN have got it right, bang on!

All said and done, Kaafiron Ki Namaaz is an amazing film, which will be remembered for a sparkling script, engaging story and picturesque cinematography. I’ll go for 5 stars!
